SIBU: Giant Sibu Hypermarket, which underwent a three-month refurbishment, is set to raise the benchmark as far as retail shopping experience is concerned in and around this fast-growing commercial hub on the banks of the Rajang River.

As such, the hypermarket group is lining up several exciting promotions and programmes slated for the local folk, in celebration of the reopening of its branch here. Marius Knight, who heads the East Malaysia and Brunei operations under GCH Retail (Malaysia) – the parent holding of Giant Hypermarket – remarked: “The refreshed and upgraded Giant Sibu Hypermarket is set to be every family’s hangout as it has something for everyone.

“The new layout and upgraded store standards that comes with a fresh outlook make it a great place for families to spend time together.”

The ceremony on Saturday kicked off with a lucky draw of the mall’s ‘Spend & Win Contest’, which ran from May 1 to July 5 throughout which, shoppers who spent RM50 in a single receipt and answered two simple questions correctly stood to win attractive prizes.

According to a statement from the organiser, the contest received an overwhelming total of 20,000 entries. The lots were picked by Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) deputy chairman Dato Andrew Wong Kee Yew after he declared the malls’s reopening that afternoon. The grand prize winner of a Perdua MyVi worth RM41,800 went to a 42-year-old housewife from Daro, Rohana Juma’at. On the other hand, Caroline Jomel, 38, brought home a unit of Lagenda motorcycle worth more than RM6,000 while Siti Hazimah, 39, walked away with an iPhone 6 smartphone worth RM2,600.

The newly-upgraded Giant Sibu Hypermarket now has a larger shopping area spanning over 45,000 square feet and with this, it has a new tenant, namely the MR D.I.Y. The expansive mall offers a variety of ‘retail therapy channels’ for shoppers including food and beverage outlets, stores selling apparel, accessories and jewellery, to shops offering various telecommunication services. There are also ATMs placed across strategic locations within the complex, in addition to 400 free parking lots for the convenience of customers as well as other facilities such as surau for Muslim shoppers, children’s playground and restrooms.
