KUCHING: Plans are now in the pipeline to turn Bau District into a top tourist destination.
Tasik Biru assemblyman Datuk Henry Harry Jinep explained and introduced Bau’s potential tourism products to Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah during a courtesy call yesterday.
Various issues, especially on the district’s strategic tourism plans and the way forward were discussed, including upgrading various places of interest and developing new products.
Tourism is one of the three main components under the transformation plan, aimed at increasing the living standards of Bau folk, creating a more conducive and liveable Bau, and to bring economic buoyancy to the district.
Bau’s close proximity to Kuching, around 30 minutes’ drive, adds to its potential to attract tourists.
Existing places of interest include the weekend Serikin Market, Fairy Cave, Wind Cave, Mount Singai, the historic Siniawan bazaar, and Tasik Biru – a remnant of gold mining activities in the district.
New tourism products include nature-related activities, network of caves, and facilities to enhance current tourist destinations.
